About Fr. John Flanagan
Born on 20th April 1925, just out side Keady in County Armagh, John was ordained a priest in the Kiltegan Fathers order, on 9th April 1950.

Fr. Flanagan began his missionary work in Southern Nigeria in 1950 and remained there for 18 years. Alongside his pastoral and missionary challenges in a parish the size of the Armagh Archdiocese, he had to build his own house using only local materials and labour. Fr. John also learned to speak the local Hausa language and used his talent as a water diviner to help local agriculture.

During his visits home (mostly for fundraising purposes), Fr. John has worked in placements in Lurgan, Newbridge, Monaghan, Liverpool and Scotland.

His departure in 1968 was caused by the war that had broken out in Nigeria, where his life was in danger.

Returning to Ireland, Fr. John took up parish work in Ahoghill in the diocese of Down and Connor where he remained for a period of 3-years.

Moving to the Archdiocese of Armagh, he took up a position in Markethill from 1972 to 1982.

In 1982 Fr. John came to the Rock and Slatequarry where he has remained for a period of 28 years.

Fr. John celebrated the Golden Jubilee of his ordination in the year 2000.
