Safeguarding Children

Posted on 07. Aug, 2010 in Parish Groups and Organisations

“Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is such as these that the kingdom of God belongs” Mk: 10:14

The awareness of child protection matters is already great in parishes throughout the diocese, but this is an ongoing project to which the Church is most strongly committed and in which considerable time and energy have been invested.  I congratulate and commend the Diocesan Child Protection Committee for the great work that has been done in this regard so far, and I look forward to the continued development of child protection practices, in keeping with Statutory Guidelines, North and South, to promote best practice in working with children and young people in our parish communities.

I thank all those who give of their time and talents at the service of the Church in this very important ministry.  As a Church, we are determined to learn from the past.  One thing we have learned, very clearly, is to value and properly esteem the dignity of every child.  For every child is made in the image and likeness of God. Every child has a right to be listened to, nurtured and protected in a safe and loving way.  Every child needs protection and attention, from their parents first of all and from all those into whose care their parents decide to entrust them.

I am confident that the measures that have been put in place will help achieve this, so that we can move forward, secure in the knowledge that the best interests of all are being supported and upheld.
